Description of the work
The artist’s father commissions a painting outside his usual standards, asking him to represent something that is not monstrous, such as painting an elephant tied to a hot-air balloon.
For the artist this is too broad a concept and so he decides to “tie” the animal to a concept of freedom, as some time before, he had heard, on the news on the TV, about the ill-treatment of circus animals.
The painting thus came to represent an elephant running away from a circus.
